When are you due?

Are you sick of that question yet? It's the most common one asked of preganant omen. The supermarket checkout person, the teller at the bank, seems like everywhere you go, someone is prying that information out of you. Have you really thought about your due date? How is it determined? How accurate is it? What if I go past it? This topic is particularly personal for me. I was only technically 'early' with one of my babies, the other four were considered 'late.' I don't like that term, quite negative, and even 'post-date' doesn't sound so positive either. If you are still pregnant past you estimated due date (EDD), your body isn't broken nor did it fail. You baby just isnt 't reay to be born yet, and that is a very personal thing, different for ever baby. There is nothing that says that all babies are finished 'cooking' at 39 weeks, 2 days gestation. As per how the EDD is calculated, when a woman is 40 wks gestation, her baby is actually only 38 wks. From The Lie of the EDD: Why Your Due Date Isn’t When You Think: “The 40 week due date is based upon Naegele’s Rule. This theory was originated by Harmanni Boerhaave, a botanist who in 1744 came up with a method of calculating the EDD based upon evidence in the Bible that human gestation lasts approximately 10 lunar months. The formula was publicized around 1812 by German obstetrician Franz Naegele and since has become the accepted norm for calculating the due date. There is one glaring flaw in Naegele’s rule. Strictly speaking, a lunar (or synodic – from new moon to new moon) month is actually 29.53 days, which makes 10 lunar months roughly 295 days, a full 15 days longer than the 280 days gestation we’ve been lead to believe is average. In fact, if left alone, 50-80% of mothers will gestate beyond 40 weeks.” So you can see where we have gone wrong from the very beginning. If you are 'post-date' what can you do? -Find a provider who supports gestating even to 42 weeks. -Make sure your EDD is based on your cycle. -Do your own research. -Be patient! Your baby knows when he or she is ready to be born. Relax, do some visualizations, meditations, or take a walk. it'll happen. Blissful birthing and babies to you! -Tori
