Informed Childbirth Classes

A childbirth class should not just teach you about the physical process of birth,

there is so much more to it. What should a good childbirth class teach you?

  • The physical process, the psychological process, the whole picture of what happens with mom and baby

  • Many different comfort measures for coping with contractions and the marathon that is birth.

  • Recognizing fear and anxiety that you may have towards birth, and working through it

  • Exploring what you want for your birth, and how to advocate for it, before labor and during.

  • Boosting confidence in your partner in their ability to support mom

  • How to make informed decisions before birth and during, should any procedures be suggested by your practitioner

  • Learn how to effectively communicate with your provider

  • Risks and benefits of certain interventions, and when they are really needed

  • What happens after birth, newborn procedures, breastfeeding and the postpartum period

My birth classes include of these things, and more!

I want you to have a satifying and empowering birth experience and a positive birth memory. My classes are a mix of group activities, informational discussion and hands-on practice of all sorts of comfort measures and positions to help with labor.

Who should take the class?  Everyone! If you are expecting a baby, and want to be able to cope well with labor and have a positive birth experience no matter what the outcome, you would benefit from this class.

No matter where you are giving birth, in a hospital, a birth center, or at home you can benefit from this class. I also offer a private class option for homebirth clients, more information is at the bottom of this page.

If you are wanting a natural birth, a birth with an epidural, having a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) or this is your first baby, you can benefit from this class.

To supplement the class I use the book Prepared Childbirth- The Family Way by Debbie Amis and Jeanne Green. It's a nice, concise book packed with lots of information and an easy read. This book is included in your class fee and is yours to keep.  You will need to bring something to take notes in, a labor ball, pillows and a yoga mat or some sort of blanket to class. Please make sure that you can attend all of the classes in the series. Each class has important information and really can not be missed. If you have to miss a class, please talk to me about it and maybe we can make some of it up, or if there is enough time left before your due date, you can make that class up in my next series.

Homebirth clients:

I also offer a homebirth class that is private, held in your home. It is a 2 or 3 week class, with a total of 6 hours divided between them. This class can be tailored to your needs. Typically I do not include a section on hospital interventions because homebirth clients are usually very well educated on these things, and there is no need to rehash it. But I can include it if you would like, or a section on what to expect in the event of a transfer. We can discuss details when you contact me. We can also figure out a mutually convenient time to have class

The fee for this class is $325, which includes a one time travel fee of $25
